The pilgrims reached Plymouth in the winter of 1620 on the Mayflower. 46 of the original 102 died within a year.....The Pilgrim's leader, Governor William Bradford, organized the first Thanksgiving Day feast in 1621 andinvited the neighboring Wamapanog Indians..... Newly discovered potato was still considered by many Europeans to be poisonous, so the feast included fish, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, clams, venison, plums and fowl (probably turkey supplied by the Wamapanogs).....The drink the Puritans brought with them on the Mayflower was
beer.....It wasn't until June of 1676 that another day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed because of the abundant crop that year.....October 1777 marked the first time that all 13 colonies joined in a Thanksgiving celebration, but they did not celebrate it on the same day.....In 1789 George Washington proclaimed November 21st a National Day of Thanksgiving. There was opposition by the colonists, many feeling the hardship of a few pilgrims did not warrant a national holiday.....In 1863, Abraham Lincoln officially set aside the last Thursday in November to be the day to celebrate the holiday each year.....To spur the struggling economy in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to make Thanksgiving fall on the third Thursday in November, making the holiday shopping season one week longer. Congress refused to go along with the change..... The only furniture the pilgrims brought on the Mayflower were chests and boxes. They constructed wooden furniture once they settled in Plymouth.....The bald eagle may be our national bird, but Benjamin Franklin hoped it would be the turkey. Thomas Jefferson opposed the idea vehemently. It is said that in anger, Benjamin Franklin dubbed the male turkeys "toms," after
Jefferson..... A turkey has approximately 3,500 feathers and can fly as fast as 55 miles per hour and run 35 miles per
hour......Israel consumes more turkey per capita than any other country.....The Iroquois and Wampanog tribes taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land, how to grow corn and other crops in the unfamiliar soil and how to fish and hunt in the new land. Sadly, the Pilgrims began to push the Indians off their land to make room for the huge influx of new settlers. Promises were made to the Indians that the land they were forced to go to would be theirs "as long as grass grows and water runs." But, alas, every treaty made was broken. Secretary of War, Lewis Cass, defended these actions by stating that "a barbarous people cannot live in contact with a civilized community." After 1676, Indian tribes were never invited to the Thanksgiving feasts :-(
